Indonesia akan memiliki satu alternatif lagi untuk backbone internasional. Hal ini terwujud lewat pembangunan serat optik bawah laut sepanjang 4.300 km dari Surabaya ke HongKong.
Pembangunan serat optik ini merupakan inisiatif dari PT Fangbian Iskan Corporindo (FIC) Indonesia, yang ternyata dimiliki oleh pengusaha lokal Dahlan Iskan. FIC Indonesia bisa menarik kabel laut sampai daratan HongKong berkat kerjasamanya dengan Telemedia Pacific Inc (TPI) HongKong.
Sementara, vendor untuk jaringan kabel lautnya sendiri adalah NEC dari Jepang. Perusahaan ini tak lain adalah perusahaan sama yang ikut dalam tender pembangunan proyek Palapa Ring.
President Director PT FIC, Linggar Mulyono menargetkan, proyek penanaman kabel antarnegara yang memakan total investasi US$ 200 juta ini, diharapkan bisa rampung dibangun selama dua tahun.
"Kami harap tahun 2011 sudah selesai. Sejak penandatangan hari ini, kami akan langsung melakukan survey teknis agar kabel bisa segera dibangun mulai pertengahan tahun ini," ucapnya di sela signing ceremony yang berlangsung di Graha Pena, Ahmad Yani, Surabaya, Sabtu (28/3/2009).
Linggar menjelaskan, jika jaringan serat optik ini sudah bisa dioperasikan nantinya, maka kemampuan kapasitas transfer data yang akan dimiliki mencapai 1,9 terabit per detik (Tbps).
"Ini setara kemampuannya dengan seluruh bahasa di dunia diucapkan secara bersamaan. Kapasitas yang cukup besar ini kami harap bisa memenuhi kebutuhan Indonesia," lanjutnya.
Proyek kabel bawah laut ini memang menghubungkan Surabaya-HongKong. Namun sebelum sampai di Surabaya, kabel terlebih dulu dicabangkan ke Jakarta. Selain Jakarta, kabel ini juga dipersiapkan untuk singgah di negara lain semisal Singapura, Manila, dan Kuala Lumpur.
